2023 SPRING PERFORMANCES

SHA CREATIVE OUTLET
FEBRUARY 29-MARCH 3, 2024
8PM

Wild Future represents the unknown yet powerful future that is rooted in the current moment. The rapport that stretches through time breaks dimensions. A point of a finger shatters an ancient pyramid. Consequences come with every decision being made at every moment. This performance consists of two pieces, “\\\” (reads as Three Slashes) and ”Dis-placement 誤置”.

Exploration of rapport is the core of the work. In “\\\”, the string is a materialization of connection between two. With the understanding that the link between us never ceases to exist, active negotiation is taking place every second. Energy flows through and morphs physical structures of bodies and strings, keeping all entangled.

”Dis-placement 誤置” is a body and mind process of role playing dreamer, shapeshifter, and monarch separately and collectively. Placement of intentions alters the quality of communication between the seeing and the seen. “A hand reaching out from my back, gently grabbing your collar, asking you to come with me.”

SHA Creative Outlet is a company that is rooted in dance and showcases in many mediums including film, photography, design, animation, and live performances. SPLIT BILL #42
KASHIA KANCEY & REBECCA MARGOLICK
MARCH 14 & 15, 2024
8PM

KASHIA KANCEY
I Believed It Too, a work that asks "When the curtain closes, who are you?" It is a solo about a woman trapped inside of a destructive false reality she is desperate to escape from. She’s experienced it so long that it seems real to her. During the solo she sheds a multitude of performative layers while facing several battles and illustrating numerous realities and characters that represent the world she’s trapped inside of. We see her go on an unraveling journey that begins to strip away at the act she’s been trying so hard to keep up with. As she struggles to maintain her mask of illusion, her perception of reality becomes distorted in many ways. Tackling topics of imposter syndrome, heartbreak, and deep self reflection - Is any of this even real?

Kashia Kancey is a Miami-born performer and choreographer, who earned her BFA in Dance from New World School of the Arts. Some of her choreographic history includes having work presented in The Carnival Studio Theater at the Adrienne Arsht Center through commissions by Peter London Global Dance Company, Movement Research at Judson Church, Dixon Place and CreateART Performance. Kashia has performed in spaces like Perez Art Museum Miami, South-Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center, Dance Place DC, the American Dance Festival, The Yard, and New York Live Arts. Kashia has had the pleasure of working with Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre, Adele Myers and Dancers, and Abby Z and the New Utility. Kashia is most recently an apprentice with Urban Bush Women and is a company member with David Dorfman Dance. She is also a 2023 Gallim Moving Artist in Residence. Kashia is based in Brooklyn, NY, and continues to pursue her career as a performer and choreographer.

REBECCA MARGOLICK
In the solo piece, Reservoir, the performer embodies the spirit of an unnamed woman, evoking imagery of the iconic Dybbuk. Drawing inspiration from Yiddish folk dance and contemporary movement, the dybbuk begins to find solace and expression through dance, channeling her rage and grief over the life she was denied. The performance is an exploration of the dreams we construct for ourselves and the uncertainty we must embrace. Through navigating grief and the changing futures we previously imagined for ourselves, the boundary between the performer's identity and that of the dybbuk gradually fades.

Rebecca's work has been presented in Turkey, Bulgaria, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Mexico, France, Germany, Poland, Israel, across the U.S and Canada. She has received residencies from Ailey’s New Directions Choreography Lab, Banff Centre, Derida Stage, Centro de las Artes San Luis Potosí, and many others. She has created works at Universidad Nacional Costa Rica, LITVAK, Ballet B.C. Annex, Ailey School, Michiyaya, and more. She is creating a new work for Oregon Ballet Theater in 2024.

AUGUST & CO.
TRISK PRODUCTION RESIDENT ARTIST
MARCH 28-30, 2024
8PM

TRANSVERBERATION; the act of beating, striking, or piercing through.

Interchangeably known as Religious Ecstasy, this tradition within Judeo-Christian mysticism recounts the experience of a subject receiving “the love of God”. It is described as an innate act of violence, penetrating its entrants through their heart in a fiery display. Though traumatic in nature, recipients of this endeavor also delight in its gratification…

It is ecstasy in the presence of agony, the behavioral motivations of pain and pleasure becoming one.

TRANSVERBERATION by August & Company is a movement-based rendering of this consecrated hedonism; anguish held with reverence, arousal begotten by torment.

“The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it.” - St. Teresa de Ávila (c. 1559)

AUGUST & CO. is a community of multi-hyphenate artists curated by August Henderson. The intention of its creation is to serve as an addition to collective consciousness, relaying personal and communal narratives that incite inquisition, deliberation, and disturbance at its core.

Past presentations/ commissions include; “All That I Know” for the digital publication “The Knowledge Within Us” commissioned by Quill Christie-Peters of The Indigenous Curatorial Collective (AUG 2020), “Acts Of Love” presented by 7mpr Dance Theatre (OCT 2019)/ Movement Research (SEP 2019), and “Visions Of You”, a prologue to the aforementioned work presented by 7mpr Dance Theatre curated by Jiali Wang (APR 2019).
